Communications-On-The-Move The Challenges Of Ensuring Accuracy by Luis Villa, CEO, IBETOR

The military environment is a particularly challenging one for maintaining viable satellite communications links. At the same time, continuous links are often critical for the safety and well being of military personnel.

Remote Communications
One of the biggest challenges for military users is the nature of their communication links. They are often in remote areas of the world where the terrain can be extremely challenging. This means equipment will certainly get bumped and bashed around a great deal more than in other environments—only extremely robust equipment will be able to withstand this sort of treatment.

Some of these areas experience extreme weather. Communications equipment must deal with rain fade and the equipment must continue to work in gale force winds, heavy rain, and even the burning sun. Such is no mean feat to accomplish.

For users, ensuring their crucial equipment adheres to the various military specifications is “must” as a starting point. Any military equipment should adhere to MIL-STD-810, which ensures that the equipment has met the approved standards for resistance to extremes of temperature, shock, dust, vibration, humidity, and solar radiation.

2014 Satellite IBETOR presents its new mobile terminal (11/03/2014)

IBETOR , the company partially owned by Aerospace and Defense EVERIS , specializing in the production of wireless and satellite systems, will display its latest mobile terminal, SOTM Ib-100x , the fair Satellite 2014 in Washington held until 13 March.

Ib-100x SOTM is specifically designed for communications on the move in an efficient and high performance, even in the roughest terrain. Its low profile ensures that the terminal is discrete and streamlined, which increases vehicle safety and personal communication.

The terminal incorporates an antenna control unit (ACU) developed by IBETOR and a precise inertial navigation system (INS), which allow the terminal is constantly aligned with the satellite. The terminal supports X-band, and soon in other frequency bands. Moreover, it is capable of running most modems suppliers can interoperate with all networks and teleports authorized.

Ib-SOTM 100x is extremely accurate. Has a lower error pointing to 0.3 ° and, moreover, is able to instantaneously reacquire the signal. As often military vehicles can take action at any time, the terminal is very easy to install or change to a different vehicle.

"We understand that many of our military customers face a number of unique challenges," says Luis Villa , president of IBETOR. "We believe this terminal will be very valuable for its ability to ensure reliable communications and high performance in this area."

IBETOR Delivers Low-Profile X-Band SCOTM System to Spanish Military (06/12/2013)

IBETOR S.L. is currently providing 55, X-band Satellite Communication-on-the-Move (SOTM) systems to the Spanish Military Emergencies Unit (UME) and Ministry of Defense (MOD) land forces groups. The product, called Ib-SOTM, is designed and manufactured by Ibetor using ThinKom Solution’s planar phased array antenna technology called Continuous Transverse Stub (CTS).

The Ib-SOTM system uses an IBETOR-developed high performance closed-loop antenna control and positioning system. The antenna control unit (ACU), in conjunction with a dual GPS antenna and an inertial navigation system (INS) supports operations on the move, maintaining miss-pointing losses of less than 0.5dB. The antenna is less than seven inches and is compatible with the Churville B.

The antenna radiation patterns are compliant with 47 CFR 25.138 and allow for high operating spectral efficiency. The IBETOR system has been tested under extreme environmental conditions (MIL-STD-810F) and has successfully uplinked data rates of 8Mbps. Ib-SOTM has been certified by hisdeSAT, a Spanish satellite government operator, and is currently in the process of certification for other military constellations.

IBETOR presents a novel satellite communications terminal in Global Fair MilSatCom (30/10/2013)

IBETOR, Everis company's Aerospace and Defense Group, dedicated to the design and production of terminals for satellite communications and wireless networks, participated; between 5 and 7 November at the Global MilSatCom, the most significant of European military satellite communications held in London. ...

IBETOR, had, with a stand where introduced satellite communications terminal for military use "Sat On The Move" with low profile antenna for moving vehicles. Next to it, attendees could also know the Ib-PACK, another portable terminal allows user mobility compatible with satellite communication skills.

The annual convention satellites in its fifteenth edition, brought together leading military representatives and industry officials using SatCom solutions in their operations. Also, the event featured panel discussions, which allowed attendees to interact and discuss the future of military satellite communications.

IBETOR officially submits first of 54 Low-profile Sat-On-The-Move systems to Spanish UME (Military Emergency Unit) (09/10/2013)

After exhausting system tests, the program office from UME (Military Emergency Unit) has certified the quality of the system, fully designed and manufactured by IBETOR, a Spanish company focused to the military SatCom systems and experts in X-Band terminals. The project has been integrated by Telefónica, as main contractor of a plurianual contract of the UME that involves many communications systems.

IBETOR's Sat-On-The-Move (Ib-SOTM) is being integrated in 54 communication vehicles, such as Mérida Bravo and Leon Bravo configurations from UME. The system provides high throughput satellite communications (up to 8Mbps bidirectional) while the vehicle is moving in extreme driving conditions in all kind of roads, even off-road.

The system has been designed to work in military applications, so it behaves optimally under any circumstance: In the Sahara Dessert as well as under Polar weather. It is compliant with the related military standards like MIL-STD 810F (for environmental conditions), MIL-STD 188-164B (for radiation mask) and MIL-STD 461 (for Electromagnetic Compatibility and Interferences).IBETOR's Ib-SOTM is the only system in the market with this high performance characteristics with a real low profile configuration (total high around 20cm from the rooftop of the vehicle) and designed to work in the X-Band frequencies.IBETOR has also developed 7 units of X-Band Manpacks for UME that have also been submitted in the past few months.
